Seasonal Planting

Plant with the seasons and the seasons plant right back. Here's what goes in now.

What you need

  • Your first and last frost dates for your area
  • A sunny spot or containers
  • Seeds or starter plants for the current season
  • A simple calendar or notebook

Step by step

1

Early spring - cool crops

Lettuce, spinach, kale, radishes, peas, and green onions like the chill. Get them in 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost.

2

Late spring - the warm crowd

Tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, beans, and okra go out after the last frost when nights stay above 50 degrees.

3

Summer - keep it going

Mulch heavy, water deep in the morning, and sow more beans and squash for a second round. Pick often so plants keep producing.

4

Fall - the second spring

Replant greens, carrots, turnips, and broccoli 8 to 10 weeks before the first frost. Cooler nights make greens sweeter.

5

Winter - rest and plan

Grow herbs on the windowsill, cover beds with leaves or cardboard, and write down what worked so next year is easier.

Grandma said

"You cannot rush a tomato. Plant in its time and it will show out for you."

Watch out for

  • Setting out warm crops too early and losing them to frost
  • Planting greens in the heat of July, then wondering why they bolt
  • Planting everything at once instead of every few weeks
  • Not writing down planting dates
